Let's Make Believe
I was about to write this long-winded rage post, but instead I’m going to write this.
The reason I don’t like doing improv anymore is because I got so fucking tired of having different people with different tastes tell me the right and wrong ways of doing improv. I also got incredibly fucking tired of coaches telling me I wasn’t being “myself” and then when I was being “myself”, having my opinions and feelings completely rejected.
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts lately on my dashboard from coaches and gurus and workshops listing the “right and wrongs” of improv—whether it’s in form, approach, philosophy or rehearsal technique. I saw a specific one today that sent me into a fifteen minute rage because I know from experience that the admonishing advice given in that post doesn’t always work-and in fact, you can do the exact opposite recommended and get amazing artistic results.
So, I wanted to write a huge post about how that was wrong, but then I realized how hypocritical that was.
Anyone’s advice can be right and anyone’s advice can be wrong.
